Pr and Media

Let's talk today about the purpose of the media.
Like we discussed in class on Monday, flirting with the media can have it's advantages but can also have it's desadvantages. Despite the popularity of the politicians, media can always and anyware destroy you. The media is always capable to make a politician even more popular. However, everything a politician do will reach the attention of the media.
Politics and media are two concepts that are linked to each other. In my opinion, there is no politics without the media, but also the reverse is possible, Media will not be that interested without politics.

Let's talk today about the use of newspapers. As we discussed in class and the mass communication theory explains, although it is very common that politicians use the newspapers on a daily basis, we are never sure who is reading the newspapers. We are never sure if we are reaching out to our audience. Therefore, politicians use not only newspapers as a communication tool, but almost every kind of media.
Going back to the use of the newspapers. Newspapers always contain a risk, because it is always possible that the reporter will spice up your article to attrack more attention and reactions. Hence, the reaction can be good or  bad, depending on the article. Therefore, the use of newspapers is not always the best way to communicate to the public, but in my opinion it is impossible not to use newspapers for politicians.
Bad news is also news, and is also a way of presenting yourself. Sometimes the amount of presenting yourself,  that people see your face, is more important than what you are presenting.

  1. Yep, I also think that especially people who are not that interested in politics can easily be affected just by publicity. It doesn't matter is it that good. For example in Finland Tony Halme, ex-boxer/wrestler got to parliament some years ago. I believe the reason was just publicity. That people remembered him. http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Tony_Halme

  2. Can you give examples from your own country? A politician that has somehow a special relationship with the media? In Finland we have Paavo Väyrynen who always blames the media for everything.

  3. Well, I think in my own country all the politicians use the media. However, one party has become very succesfull due to a television program. In belgium it is called 'de slimste mens' in english this would be the smartest person. The final of this programme was played by the party chairman ( Bart De Wever) of the nv-a. He did not win at this program, but his party won the elections. Some people think, like me, that his succes rose because he participated in that programme.
